Hissi’s are an intelligent, independent, yet friendly and gentle type of creature. With limited flight abilities, they keep mostly to the ground. Still, in the wild, it's not unusual to find them dozing away on the highest tree branches they can reach in order to soak up the sun. When traveling in densely wooded areas it's always a good idea to be wary of falling Hissi’s. While they are mostly harmless to Starkins, it can be quite a shock having one suddenly fall on your head! In captivity they are very gentle pets, however they are always motivated by their own mysterious goals, and their actions don’t always make sense to Starkins. Some believe that Hissi’s don't actually love their owners, that their only concerned with their next meal, but avid Hissi lovers insist that their little scaly friends absolutely do love them back!

Hissi's are a common sight in Starkin households, sometimes even in homes that don't actually own a Hissi. As a species they are highly independent, and tend to go where the please. They are excellent hunters, and do a fantastic job of keeping the local pests in check, though debates often rage over if it's morally right or responsible to allow your pet Hissi to roam. Many believe they should only ever be kept in special enclosures, and let out only while supervised. Others believe it's best to let them do what they were born to do, and that without them the pests in their area would be way worse.

Escape Artists?

Some owners go to great lengths to build spacious and elaborate enclosures for their prized pets, but there's one problem... Hissi's are renowned for their aptitude for escaping, even from enclosures their owners deem perfect and escape proof. Hissi have a number of skills that make this possible.

  • When on the ground they can move much faster than one might expect, they are also unusually strong for their size and appearance and are adept at climbing, even sheer surfaces aren’t much trouble for them so long as there is some kind of texture for their scales to latch on to!

  • Limited flight capabilities allow them to momentarily get a few feet off the ground and reach places they wouldn't otherwise, though they can't stay in the air for more than a few seconds, and they cannot hover. It's usually just enough to get them where they want to go. Hissi's with more wings are prettier but also more problematic in this regard as they can fly much higher and for longer, however they still are not capable of hovering in one place for more than a second before falling back to the ground.

  • Just like any other snake-like species, they are also extremely flexible, able to quite literally bend themselves in half. Owners are often advised to make sure any decorations in their enclosures have openings big enough to prevent them from getting stuck when they inevitably try to do so while moving through said opening.

  • More unusually than the above capabilities, they can flatten themselves to about one third of their usual height. Allowing them to slip through spaces that most Stakins would think impossible.

  • Lastly, Hissi's love to play dead. When all other attempts fail, or if they feel threatened or scared, a Hissi's last line of defense is to play dead. Owners will tell you these acts are extremely believable and can often give doubt to even to experienced owners who are familiar with the tactic.

These traits combined with their independent nature and inclination towards escaping are often problematic for owners of these notoriously adorable little devils. Hissi's are well known for getting themselves stuck in very unusual places in the process of escaping. This usually results first in a game of "find The Hissi" which is quickly followed by games of "Oh Great It's Stuck In The Ceiling Tiles." or similar such games as their owners try to figure out how to get their precious pet UNstuck without hurting it or damaging their property, usually with no help, or sometimes even active resistance from the Hissi itself.
